In Japanese traditional wooden houses, the most effective way to make wall stiff is to use wooden braces within timber frames. Statical loading tests on the timber frames with braces were executed, brace types of which were X-shape and inverse V-shape. The braces were connected to timber frame with nails directly or metal plate and nails. Bearing capacity of the timber frames with braces are greatly different by the shape type of frames and connection types. Total bearing capacity of timber frame with braces may be expressed as the sum of the strength of the connection of the braces and frame and bear strength of the frame itself.
