The conductivity and the dielectric constant of particles in ER fluid have some effects on the performance. In this study, the semiconducting barium titanate particles were used as conductive ceramic particles. The low resistivity ceramic particles, the high resistivity ceramic particles and barium titanate particle were dispersed in silicon oil. The many tight clusters for ER fluid containing conductive ceramic particles were formed under ac electric field or dc electric field. The relation between the shear stress and the shear rate was measured under ac electric field or dc electric field using a rotational viscometer. The shear stress of ER fluid containing conductive ceramic particles and silicon oil with the viscosity of 100 cSt under ac electric field was higher than that under dc electric field. The shear stress of ER fluid containing high resistivity ceramic particles was the highest of all ER fluids in this experiment.
