The internal states of the system are water storage levels, which can not be measured directly but eventually play an important role in calculating the amount of water in each process of the cycle such as snowmelt, snowpack, runoff, and evapotranspiration. Since the hydrologic process from precipitation to runoff has nonlinear characteristics, system-theoretic nonlinear state estimation technics are applied to the system in order to estimate unobservable water storage levels.
