Ashida et al. in preparation), we investigated the effects of saponins on superoxide anion (O_2^-) production by polymorphonuclear leukocytes (PMNs) in guinea pigs or yellow tails in vitro. When stimulated with phorbol-12-myristate-13-acetate (PMA), the O_2^- production was accelerated in PMNs of mammals and fishes and the quillaja saponin pretreatment in vitro significantly suppressed the O_2^- production.
