One of them (Alg-1) produced alginate(s) intracellularly and other 5 strains (Alg-2, Alg-4, Alg-7, Alg-10 and Alg-11) produced the enzyme(s) extracellular ly when grown in medium containing alginate. The enzymes were shown to split glycosyl bonds of alginate producing unsaturated uronides, as those which have so far been reported. Intracellular alginase.(s) of Alg-9 showed a preference for mannuronic acid-rich substrates, whereas extracellular alginase(s) of Alg-10 was rather preferentially active on guluronic acid-rich substrates. The pH optimum of alginase activities of both Alg-9 and Alg-10 was 8.5 (Tris-HC1 buffer), and their optimum temperature, 25℃.
