          <datacite:description descriptionType="Other">It is necessary for a power system to undertake maintenance works regularly to secure stable power supply, which inevitably cause outage of associated apparatuses. This problem, referred to as the outage planning of an electric power system in this paper, has been so far made based on the knowledge and experiences of planning engineers. However, the scheduling made by the engineers has not been necessarily optimal since there are no rational criterion to judge the results. This paper presents numerical indices reflecting the power system security by which the quality of a proposed outage work plan can be evaluated quantitatively. However, evaluating power supply reliability from one of the indices may cause the following cases: there is little difference in indices among prepared system configurations and it does not probably represent power supply reliability in outage planning. Therefore, we propose combining the proposed indices to comprehensively evaluate power supply reliability. Since a large amount of computational efforts is needed to calculate these indices, the DC load flow by the bounding method is used to alleviate the computational burden without sacrificing the necessary degree of accuracy. The proposed indices are applied to a part of the 110 kV transmission line system. Results obtained have made clear the effectiveness of the proposed indices to the current scheduling based on the just the experience of the maintenance engineers.</datacite:description>
